Kin field shield
Kin field shield series by Camille Dumond consists of three wall-mounted ceramic sculptures. Extracted from a larger, ongoing series, these three geometrically distinct forms — reminiscent of the artist’s earlier suspended ceramic spheres — evoke thick umbrellas, inverted shelters, or reimagined shields.
The singular glazing technique that the artist has developed over the course of her evolving relationship with ceramics lends these pieces their unique finish. Here, the deliberately uneven glaze highlights the handmade gesture, emphasizing a slow, intentional production process and the pursuit of a form of autonomy, as well as the unpredictability inherent in the craft.
Titled Kin field shield (lavender 1), Kin field shield (lavender 2), and Kin field shield (hedge cedar), the names reference the plants used — lavender and cedar — whose ashes were collected by the artist from her native region in Normandy. These ashes were transformed into glazes, serving as both a covering and protection for the form. More significantly, they act as indicators of the artist’s personal geography, reflecting both a place of production and existence, a place to protect.
Indirect archives, Kin field shield are also sentimental works, evoking personal journeys, whether technical or geographical, as well as a form of resistance — of gesture and place, whether revealed or concealed.
